5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day 2021
What: Earth Day 2021
When: Thursday, April 22, 2021
Where: Our home planet
Why: Because we love it here!
Although humans have been walking the planet for millennia, and prior to that, swinging above the planet, our first official celebration of the Earth came in 1970.
In response to poisonous fuel, rising pollution, and dire concern for the ensuing effects on human health, Rachel Carson penned Silent Spring in 1962 to widespread acclaim. Through the mobilizing medium of written word, she made irrefutable connections between the well-being of the environment and public health, breathing life into a cause for saving our planet.
In 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin spearheaded efforts to bring environmental education to college campuses, tapping into the reliable prowess of students to unite behind a cause. With a dedicated staff and national media attention following the adoption of the new name, “Earth Day,” millions took to the campaign with an enthusiastic demonstration of their support, including rallies, marches, and protests against harmful practices.
Now, with 50 years of annual dedication, Earth Day is a global event marked by a concerted effort to uplift our home planet.
